Jeanne and I would like to wish all the players and coaches good luck in the tournament and thank you for playing in the Taylor’s Cup.  Thank you to Mihoko Terada and volunteers for once again organizing a great competition in the area Taylor loved. It is a wonderful way to remember her and the area so affected by the Great East japan Eqrthquake and Tsunami.

I am truly happy that my beloved Miyagi and so many unbroken connections have led me here again this year to take part in the Taylor Anderson Cup. Through the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred on New Year's Day this year, I once again strongly felt the desire to contribute in whatever small way I could, and the importance of passing on the lessons of the disaster to future generations. The words "Live your dream," also inscribed on Taylor's memorial — grateful that I can chase my own dream now thanks to so many connections and so much support, I will play my very best to deliver dreams, courage, and smiles to as many people as I can! I am truly looking forward to meeting so many people at Onagawa Stadium!

I will do my best hoping to show the people of Tohoku a lively, energetic performance on the pitch.

Thirteen years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake. I feel every day that the ordinary life I now have, which I take for granted, is never something to be taken for granted. I too was affected the day before my junior high school graduation ceremony, which was postponed as a result. Afterward, I entered Tokiwagi Gakuen High School and once again felt how grateful I was to be able to play football. I also learned the importance of bringing courage and hope to disaster-affected areas, and I have continued playing football with that feeling in my heart ever since. Given this opportunity, I want to play with everything I have so that Miyagi, Tohoku, and all of Japan can move forward together with strength.

I am Akane Miyoshi, and I have been given the chance to take part in the Taylor Anderson Cup this time. I am only able to challenge myself abroad because of the support and help of so many people around me, so I had been hoping to repay that in some other form, and I'm happy to have this opportunity now. All I can still do is give my all on the pitch, but I hope that through my play I can bring even a little hope and joy to everyone!

I am grateful for the chance to take part in such a precious tournament. I look forward to playing football alongside players who each carry their own feelings toward the disaster-affected area. I want to convey, through women's football, the importance of holding onto dreams and hope, and to play in a way that brings smiles to everyone who visits Onagawa Stadium.

I was in my hometown of Aomori at the time of the disaster. The shaking was strong and I was home alone, and I still remember how frightened I was. Afterward, I entered Tokiwagi Gakuen, and I played every day believing that what we could do now was bring courage and energy to people through football. I am very happy to be able to play in Sendai again like this, and I hope people can also come to know the wonderful side of sport — that it can bring courage and energy, and that through the joy of football, people can connect with one another! I want to play with everything I have and enjoyment, and make it a match that those watching can enjoy too! Thank you for your support!

At the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, I was in the first year of elementary school, living in Akita Prefecture. I will never forget that time. I hadn't started playing football back then, but now, being able to take part in a tournament like this through football, I feel both happy and a sense of fateful connection. I play hoping that the football I love so much can bring smiles and energy to many people. And I would be happy if this tournament makes everyone here fall in love with football too.

We are very grateful for this wonderful opportunity to play such a match.

Thirteen years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake, and we too are concerned that memories of the disaster may fade with time.
Through this tournament, in memory of Taylor Anderson and the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, we will play with dedication and everything we have, never giving up, in the hope of bringing energy to the people of Ishinomaki and Onagawa.

We also hope this tournament will help promote and develop women's football.

The Day Before the Match

Friday, June 7, 2024. With the Taylor Anderson Cup one day away, the players and staff went to pay their respects to Ms. Taylor.

Captain Midori Yoshimura laid flowers at Ms. Taylor's memorial.

Coach Masaki laid flowers for the children of the Endo family, who were once Ms. Taylor's students.

As a representative of the Japan-based players, Miwa Sasaki laid flowers at the place bearing Ms. Taylor's name.

We visited the site of woodworker Shinichi Endo's former home and heard his story.

We put our hands together in prayer at the jizo statues for his three children, who had been Ms. Taylor's students.

We visited Watanoha Elementary School, where Ms. Taylor had worked.

The "Taylor Bunko" (Taylor Library) was created by Mr. Endo.

Match Day

Saturday, June 8, 2024. Despite being the rainy season, we had clear skies again this year — perhaps Ms. Taylor and the others are cheering us on. This year too, we were welcomed with lovely flowers from Flower Shop Hanatomo at Seapal-Pier Onagawa.  We were helped by many experienced volunteers, including women's football coaches from Ishinomaki and women from Onagawa Town. The tournament MC role was ably filled by a woman who had been one of Ms. Taylor's students.
Thank you to Steve, a fellow ALT of Ms. Taylor's, and to Daniel, who came all the way from America. In the morning, we held a children's football clinic.
The little kids were just too adorable.  Before the match and at halftime, Sakura Baton Club Miyagi's Ishinomaki class performed again, as they did last year.

After the match, we held a retirement ceremony for Sawako Suzuki.
